the celebration of World Philosophy Day 2011 will take place on

Thursday 17 November 2011

UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

A variety of conferences related to philosophy and critical thinking will take place on this occasion, namely on the equitable sharing of the benefits of science, on the thought and work of philosophers on their role on changes in the world, on the recent events in the Arab world and the role of women in social transformations, on the new philosophical practices and most notably philosophy for children, etc.

Other events are also envisaged, namely a film screening, cafés philo, exhibitions, a philosophy bookfair…

RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE TEACHING OF PHILOSOPHY

[UNESCO recommends] Philosophy teachers and practitioners as well as civil society actors, to:

Exploring new approaches to philosophy teaching

• Develop suitable courses and philosophical fora that foster public awareness on the new social and ethical challenges for humanity while making reference to classical texts and authors belonging to various philosophical corpora;

• Foster critical exploration of the different philosophy schools belonging to Western traditions and to other cultural and intellectual heritages;

• Work with teachers of other disciplines in order to experiment an interdisciplinary approach to philosophy teaching, for instance through introducing philosophical analysis and specifically philosophical topics into existing subject matters in primary and secondary schools;

• Encourage the universities, philosophy departments, research centres on philosophy and human sciences to overcomedisciplinary compartmentalization and to promote more interdisciplinarity on the basis of solid disciplinary knowledge, with a view to reach out to the wider public;

• Use NICTs, when available, to facilitate interactions, active learning methods and international communication, while engaging in conscious and critical reflection on this issue so as to avoid giving youth the feeling that knowledge is a mere juxtaposition of fragmented information ;

• Organize, with the support of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), specific sessions and workshops during the World Congress of Philosophy that will be dedicated to
philosophy teaching.

«One day, that is the unit of time devoted to debates in which each and every person should feel free to participate according to his or her convictions.


Many places, that is our unit of space, because our common goal is also to enhance arguments and counterarguments not only in one agora but in all the parts of this big house that we invite you to come and discover every year.

Finally, a unity of action, of common action, to reaffirm the true value of philosophy, that is to say the establishment of dialogue that must never cease when it comes to essential matters, and of thought which gives us back a large part of human dignity whatever our condition.»

International Network of Women Philosophers

The International Network of Women Philosophers was created within the context of UNESCO’s implementation of its Intersectoral Strategy on Philosophy, as adopted in 2005 by the Organization's Executive Board during its 171st session. The Network aims to:
Strengthen exchanges and solidarity among the women philosophers of the different regions of the world.
Help break the isolation, notably by creating ties, for instance through a system of tutoring, of women philosophers, philosophy students and professors, researchers and research teams needing support.
Facilitate the spreading of the work and the circulation of the publications of women philosophers around the world.
Support active increased participation of women philosophers in various philosophy colloquia, symposia, seminars, congresses and conferences throughout the world.
Foster cooperation with other networks, such as research networks, universities, research centres, specialized philosophical institutions, NGOs, etc. We wish to emphasize the role of prime importance to be played by all of UNESCO’s partners, as well as by journalists and the mass media. It is up to them to encourage and spread the work accomplished by women philosophers throughout the world.
